Snuggly Schnauzers Puppy Feeding Guide

At Snuggly Schnauzers, we believe nutrition is one of the most important foundations for raising healthy, thriving puppies. From the very beginning, our puppies are raised on a carefully selected, high-quality diet designed to support optimal digestion, coat quality, growth, and long-term health.

Our Preferred Diet: Fresh Raw Feeding

We primarily feed We Feed Raw, a premium fresh raw diet that is both nutritionally complete and incredibly convenient. Unlike traditional raw feeding, We Feed Raw uses a process called High Pressure Processing (HPP). This safely eliminates harmful bacteria and parasites without cooking the food, so all the natural nutrients remain intact. This allows you to get the benefits of raw feeding without the risks or complexity.

Why We Love It

Complete and balanced nutrition

No fillers, preservatives, or unnecessary additives

Highly digestible and biologically appropriate

Puppies absolutely love it

Simple & Convenient Routine

It is simple and realistic for busy families:

Delivered every 8 weeks via subscription

Stored in the freezer

Each morning, move one pack to the fridge to thaw for the next day

Forgot? No problem—thaws in ~10 minutes in warm water

It’s just as easy as kibble… but far better for your puppy.

Alternative Fresh Option

Another option is Freshpet, a fresh, slow cooked refrigerated food that includes meat along with vegetables and other ingredients.

Available at Costco and Sam’s Club  (for adult dogs)

For puppies, you must use the Puppy Formula:

Blue tube puppy formula

Blue tube grain-free puppy formula

Blue bag puppy bites

Commonly found at Petco and Albertsons, Ralphs and other pet stores

Freshpet is still a much better option than kibble. It does include vegetables and grains as opposed to 100% meat.

Kibble Option (If Preferred)

If you prefer kibble, we recommend:

Royal Canin Miniature Schnauzer Puppy Formula

It is one of the few kibble options specifically formulated for the breed.

Important

For young puppies around 8 weeks old, Kibble must be softened with warm water

Let it sit until fully soft before feeding

Why We Strongly Recommend Fresh Feeding

Fresh feeding—especially a raw, meat-based diet—offers major benefits:

Better digestion and nutrient absorption
Healthier skin and softer, fuller coats
Higher energy and overall vitality
Puppies genuinely love eating

A Benefit Most People Don’t Expect

One of the biggest differences families notice right away:
Smaller, less frequent stools
Because your puppy’s body is actually using most of what they eat (instead of passing fillers), there is very little waste.

That means:
Easier cleanup
Less odor
A noticeably cleaner experience overall

It’s one of those unexpected benefits that ends up mattering a lot day-to-day.

Our Recommendation

While all three options are acceptable:

Best overall: Fresh raw 100% meat (We Feed Raw)

Great alternative: Freshpet meat and veggie (puppy formula)
Kibble option: Royal Canin Miniature Schnauzer Puppy

If it’s within your budget, we strongly recommend feeding fresh for the long-term health and well-being of your puppy.

How to Transition to a New Food (Slowly and Safely)

If you plan to switch your puppy’s diet, please let us know as soon as possible.

We prefer to begin transitioning before your puppy goes home to avoid digestive upset and make the adjustment seamless for both you and your new puppy. If you decide to change your puppy's food in the future, use this gradual schedule to help your puppy adjust:

  • Days 1–2: 80% current food, 20% new food

  • Days 3–4: 60% current food, 40% new food

  • Days 5–6: 50% current food, 50% new food

  • Days 7–8: 40% current food, 60% new food

  • Days 9–10: 20% current food, 80% new food

  • Day 11+: 100% new food

Soft Stools During Transition Are Normal

If your puppy gets soft stools:

  • Pause the transition.

  • Stay at the current ratio for 1–2 more days.

  • Resume the transition more slowly.

Every puppy’s tummy is different — slower is always safer.
